What to Expect in an EFT Tapping Session: A Step-by-Step Guide

What is EFT?

EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques – it’s often simply called Tapping because it involves tapping gently with the fingertips on pressure points on the face and upper body.

At its core, EFT is a stress reduction technique that helps us step out of the stress response and calm the mind and body, it can be used on a wide range of physical and emotional issues.

Step 1: An Introduction to EFT Tapping

If it's your first session, we'll begin with a brief overview of EFT and I’ll answer any questions you have. I’ll then guide you through a simple demonstration to help you get a feel for the technique.

Step 2: Exploring your Issue

Once you’re familiar with the technique, we’ll have a conversation about what you'd like to focus on - EFT tapping can be used to work on most issues that you’d explore in a traditional talk therapy or a coaching setting.

You can share as much or as little as you’re comfortable with. For sensitive topics, there's no need to go into detail unless you choose to.

Using your words, I'll craft statements that we’ll use during the tapping rounds – these could be simple statements about what you’re experiencing through to more creative questions and suggestions to help you unlock deeper layers of emotion and understanding.

Throughout the session, we’ll also rate the intensity of your feelings on a scale from 0-10 to track progress.

Step 3: The Tapping Process


I’ll guide you through the tapping points on the head and upper body.

I’ll tap on myself and you’ll mirror me whilst repeating the phrases I say – in general I’ll give you one sentence to repeat on each point and we’ll tap roughly 5-7 times while saying it.

You don’t need to remember the points yourself – you just follow along (most clients find they’re really familiar with them by the end of just one session!).

You’ll always be tapping on yourself because I want you to feel confident using EFT on your own whenever you need it.

The words we use focus your attention on the challenge you’re working on whilst the tapping sends a calming signal to the brain letting it know that it is safe to relax around the issue – this allows you to safely process and clear the emotions and memories that underpin your challenge.

Step 4: Monitoring Changes

After each round of tapping, we’ll pause to check in.

You might notice shifts in emotions, physical sensations, or new insights. Often, as one issue resolves, another layer surfaces, which we can then address. This process helps clear emotional blocks and brings a sense of relief.

Sometimes, memories pop up - even ones you hadn’t thought about in years. This is normal and often really helpful as it means we clear the roots of your issue.

As we tap, I’ll ask questions to guide you deeper and help uncover hidden layers of emotion.

We’ll follow these threads gently, tapping on anything that comes up, processing and clearing each aspect as it arises.

Step 5: Closing the Session


As our time together comes to a close, I’ll work with you to ensure we end things in a safe way so you leave the session feeling grounded and secure.

We’ll reflect on your progress, anything surprising that came up and what we might work on in the next session if you choose to have one.

I may also suggest simple tapping exercises to practice on your own between sessions.

I offer one hour, 1:2:1 EFT Tapping sessions over zoom either as standalone sessions or in discounted multi-session packages.

Single Sessions:

Ideal to try it out – if you're new to EFT or my approach, you can book a single session to see if it’s the right fit for you.

Great for one-off support - for those moments when need you need support to work through a standalone, specific challenge without committing to multiple sessions.

Packages (discounted 3 or 6 session blocks)

The perfect approach when you have a specific issue that you want to work through in more depth.

This approach enables us to set goals and intentions for the block of sessions and make progress in a structured, consistent way.
